Method

  1. First whisk together flour, sugar, salt and yeast

  2. Then pour warm water and mix until a shaggy dough forms

  3. Dump onto a clean surface, and knead until smooth dough forms. The dough should be smooth and slightly tacky, but not sticky. If its sticky try kneading it with another couple tsps of flour

  4. Once you have a smooth dough, place it in a bowl and cover with a towel. Place somewhere warm for approx 1 hour- it should almost double in size

  5. After the dough has risen, transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead the dough for 1 minute. Cut into 4 equal sized pieces. Using your hands, roll the pieces of dough into smooth balls. Push down using your thumb to make a hole in the center, and shape like a bagel

  6. Let bagels sit for 5-10 minutes to rest

  7. Then, transfer them to a pot of boiling water and boil on each side for 1 minute

  8. Transfer to parchment paper lined baking sheet and top with desired bagel toppings. For plain bagels an egg wash can be brushed on top of the bagels for a shiny golden crust. Just mix 1 egg with 1 Tbsp of water

  9. Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. The bagels should be golden brown and crispy perfect!

  10. Bagel Flavors
  11. Cheddar jalapeño
  12. Top with shredded sharp cheddar cheese and slices of fresh jalapeños.

  13. Cinnamon crunch
  14. Brush tops of bagels with melted butter. Then mix ¼ cup of brown sugar and 1 tbsp cinnamon together and sprinkle on top before baking.

  15. Parmesan
  16. Top with Parmesan cheese and dried or fresh herbs. Thyme, rosemary or Italian seasoning would work well.
